Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME gTLD is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing 3rd-level domain names remained active.
